The work of Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto carries a profound resonance beneath its delicate form. His large-scale installations, painstakingly created from salt, embody themes of loss, acceptance, and preservation. Born in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, Yamamoto first turned to salt in 1994 after the death of his sister from a brain tumor, and later returned to it following the passing of his wife of 25 years to breast cancer. What began as a way of coping with grief has become both a catalyst for healing and a vessel of remembrance—an art practice that honors those no longer with us.
